How to Read Your Analytics Like a Conversion Strategist

Most businesses look at traffic and bounce rate. Conversion strategists look at different numbers — and they ask different questions. Here is how to shift your analytics practice from reporting to diagnosing.

Stop starting with traffic

Traffic tells you how many people arrived. It tells you almost nothing about why they left or why they converted. Start your analysis at the conversion event and work backwards through the funnel.

The four numbers that matter

For any funnel, the four numbers that predict revenue are: entry traffic volume, step-by-step drop-off rates, conversion rate at the final step, and average order or lead value. Everything else is context.

Segment before you conclude

A 2% conversion rate averaged across all traffic sources can hide a 6% rate from organic search and a 0.4% rate from paid social. Always segment by traffic source, device type, and new versus returning visitors before drawing conclusions.

Qualitative data closes the gap

Analytics tells you where visitors drop off. It does not tell you why. Session recordings, heatmaps, and exit surveys answer the why — and the why is where the fix lives.

Shifting from reporting to diagnosing takes about three hours of setup and changes how every future analytics review runs. The questions become more specific, the hypotheses become more testable, and the optimisations become more predictable.
